Give coursing a test drive in twenty-five

The calendar for our 2025 season is out now and we expect a superb opening round to be conducted at Longwood Coursing Club on the 27th April 2025 and the following week at Lang Lang Coursing Club on the 4th May 2025.  These are memorial meetings acknowledging those who contributed to our sport in the past and are not here to celebrate with us.

We will be calling for nominations for puppies and maidens to give them a tilt at coursing.  However, depending on nominations there may be other events, so get your greyhounds ready.

  • Puppies ages for the 2025 coursing season are greyhounds whelped on or after 01/03/2023.
  • Keep in mind you can run your puppies in puppy events and win them for the entire season, they do not have to go up in grade when they win a stake (event).
  • Puppy greyhounds can nominate and course in an event once the age of 16 months has been attained. It’s a great learning curve for young greyhounds.
  • Maidens are those greyhounds that have not won a coursing event,
  • Nomination Age greyhounds can be nominated for a coursing event at the age of 16 months

When a sport has a history that’s long (152 years) and varied (plenty of ups and downs) like ours, we need to keep our ‘eye on the prize’ and support our industry in its entirety.  This year sees the 150th anniversary of the Derby and the Oaks. They are events for puppies only.  At coursing you see how people really care for their charges and love to see these magnificent animals doing what they love.  Running and chasing.

Seeing a trainer give the greyhound a cuddle before or after their event, regardless of whether the greyhound won the course or not, is a reward in itself.  Then there’s the care given to rehydrate, check their feet, give them the once over.  If it’s cold, plenty of coats to keeps them warm.

Coursing is a great way to start your young greyhounds racing.  The greyhound only has one other competitor each course.  You can keep your greyhound with you in your float or van in between courses.  There will be a Vet check prior to each course for every greyhound.  Welfare and safety are key initiatives for our sport.

After the first two weeks, we have a week off for Mothers’ Day and then we head back to Longwood Coursing Club on the 18th May for the Benalla Cup and the Gary Brett Memorial.  The final Sunday in May 25, we are back to Lang Lang Coursing Club for the Slips to Boxes meeting (Lang Lang to Healesville) and that my fellow enthusiast competes our first 4 meetings.

Trialling information is as follows: –
