Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has today announced the decision to cancel the 2023-24 Victorian Greyhound Awards night in its current gala format with the event to be replaced with a scaled-down awards presentation night.
This decision has been made as part of a continuing review into GRV’s operations to assist in meeting necessary cost savings and in the context of the GRV organisational change proposal and recent prizemoney reductions.
GRV is currently finalising plans for a revised, scaled-down awards presentation night proposed to be held at Sandown Park on Thursday 8 August, coinciding with the state finals of the Nationals, to replace the Victorian Greyhound Awards night which was scheduled for late August.
Some of the annual awards will be presented at the Sandown event, some will be awarded and recognised but not presented on the night, while other awards will be deferred until 2025.
Quotes from GRV chief executive officer Stuart Laing:
“Given the challenging financial climate facing the Victorian greyhound racing industry, it’s neither appropriate nor financially prudent to proceed with this year’s Victorian Greyhound Awards night in its previous format.
“Instead, we will hold a revised, scaled-down presentation night, which will recognise the stars of the sport from the past season, and also allow for a detailed assessment of the awards night and how the event can best represent the industry going forward.
“We thank everyone for their understanding as GRV continues to adjust its operational expenditure in the current climate.”
