Greyhound racing’s $100K Good Friday Appeal mission

Victoria’s greyhound racing fraternity is striving to raise in excess of $100,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s 2022 Good Friday Appeal.

GRV and its race clubs have already collectively raised more than $80,000 for the cause this year through a variety of fundraising efforts including Team GRV’s participation in 3AW’s Neil’s Cruise for the Kids.

Greyhound racing will be held for the first time on Good Friday in 2022, with the three host clubs – Healesville, Traralgon and Geelong – to donate $50 every time a greyhound wearing the white number three rug wins on the day, with that figure to be matched by GRV.

Key times

  • 1.18pm: First race Healesville
  • 1.52pm: First race Traralgon
  • 5.19pm: First race Geelong
  • 6.22pm: Geelong Gold Cup Heat 1

All three clubs will hold raffles during their race meetings on Friday along with their very own Good Friday Appeal Cup, while SEN Track will conduct outdoor broadcasts from all three meetings.

Healesville began its fundraising months ago, while Traralgon this week held a silent auction for a number of breeding straws kindly donated by various members of the greyhound racing community.

All eyes will be on the Beckley Centre’s night meeting, which will incorporate six heats of the Geelong Gold Cup, while 3AW radio personality and former AFL champion, David Schwarz will play the role of auctioneer.

All three Good Friday race meetings will be open to the public, while people will be able to follow greyhound racing’s fundraising progression through a ‘virtual’ greyhound race on social media, which will see Turbo the greyhound travel from Healesville to Traralgon to Geelong at a speed determined by the amount of donations coming in.
