Champion breeder Paul Wheeler has passed away

The greyhound racing world is in shock with news that Paul Wheeler has passed away at age 66.

The most successful greyhound breeder/owner that Australia, if not the world, has ever seen, Paul was the man behind the famous ‘Bale’, ‘Dyna’ and ‘Allen’ bloodlines, which produced countless champions over several generations.

Although based in NSW, it’s doubtful anyone has been more influential on Victorian greyhound racing in the past 25 years than Paul.

His Victorian dynasty began in the late nineties with the likes of Lansley Bale, Suellen Bale and Kantarn Bale, while more recently his superstars included the incredible Xylia Allen and million-dollar trio Fernando Bale, Dyna Double One and, of course, Fanta Bale.

And Paul’s remarkable effort to breed (and own) the first seven placegetters in the 2011 Melbourne Cup, won by Dyna Tron, was the single most extraordinary achievement by a greyhound breeder we’re ever likely to see.

Paul leaves behind wife Jan and four children including son Brendan, who has played a huge role in the Wheeler family’s success.
