The Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) is delighted to welcome official industry wagering partner Tabcorp (TAB) on board as the exclusive naming rights sponsor of the inaugural edition of The Phoenix.
To be held on Saturday night 18 December 2021 at The Meadows, The TAB Phoenix is a $1.145 million slot race for greyhounds, offering $750,000 to the winner.
MGRA Chair Eddie Caruana noted his Board’s appreciation to TAB for their support of the Club’s new initiative and commitment to ensuring the race is a success.
“The TAB Phoenix represents a significant investment from our Club not only financially, but also through the many, many months of planning that have gone into making it a reality,” Mr Caruana said.
“To have TAB sign on to sponsor the race shows their commitment both to our Club and the broader greyhound racing industry here in Victoria, and we thank them very much for their support and the contribution they are making toward the success of the event.”
Tabcorp’s Managing Director Wagering and Media, Adam Rytenskild, echoed the MGRA’s enthusiasm for the event and the race concept.
“We are excited about the launch of The Phoenix and sponsoring the inaugural event,” Mr Rytenskild said.
“As a long-term partner of Greyhound Racing Victoria and The Meadows, we are looking forward to getting behind the new concept and getting TAB punters involved.
“The new race is going to be a great success and generate strong appeal. We can’t wait for December 18th.”
GRV Chair Peita Duncan commended TAB for their support of The Phoenix.
“It is terrific to see TAB extend their industry support to the Melbourne Greyhounds by sponsoring the first running of The Phoenix,” Ms Duncan said.
“We look forward to seeing a strong promotional campaign from both organisations, demonstrating to the broader sporting community just how exciting greyhound racing can be.”
Attention now turns to the announcement of the eight successful Slot Holders.
The Independent Assessment Panel met on Friday (3 September) to assess and rank the applications, with a digital announcement set to be made on Sunday 12 September – further details of which will be announced in the coming days.
