Collinda Patty demolished Dyna Double One’s long standing 595m track record this afternoon in one of the most dominant gallops seen at Sandown Park.
Making her middle distance debut, Collinda Patty thrived over the additional ground to trounce her rivals, powering to a 9.5 length victory in 33.562 and slash more than a length off the previous mark.
Trainer Jason Thompson has made little secret of his opinion of the greyhound, however her lack of early speed and poor run of box draws has meant she had yet to consistently show that ability on race day. The step up in distance has been eagerly anticipated – and long planned – it wasn’t intended to be at Sandown over 595m.
“We were going to go to Sale for a 0-4 win GDR race but there wasn’t enough noms so dad said we’ll put her in here over 595m and hopefully she gets an alright box,” said jubilant handler Holly Thompson.
“She got box 1 – her first ever box 1 – so we were already excited. All we needed was for her to get the start right.”
Collinda Patty stepped with the rest of the field and the benefit of the inside draw was soon apparent. She held her place on the rail beneath group 1 winner Fernando Cazz and once she straightened she had already established a three length break with a lap to go. From the there margin only got bigger, taking half a length off Dyna Patty’s second split record (22.81) on her way to establishing the new time standard over 595m.
The upcoming Speed Star at the Meadows is next on the agenda for the newest star from Awesome Lodge, with a career over the ‘half-mile’ also a possibility.
“She’s booked in for the Speed Star next Saturday so she’s see how she goes there, then we’ll play it by year.
“We thought with her ability she can go over the distance and hopefully she can get 700m.“
