(Pink) Diamonds are Angela’s best friend

“But diamonds are a girl’s best friend.”

Anakie’s Angela Langton is hoping Marilyn Monroe’s lyrics ring true when her ‘sparkling’ prospects contest heats of the ‘Pink Diamond’ Maiden Sprinter (460m) and Maiden Short Course (400m) at Geelong tonight.

Langton has a total of six ‘glittering’ hopefuls engaged as the inaugural Pink Diamond Series – with $830,000 in prizemoney and breeders’ bonuses – commences with Maiden heats also at Warragul later this afternoon, Ballarat (Saturday) and Shepparton (Monday).

A highlight of the Maiden heats are the superb bloodlines – and Langton’s contingent is no exception.

She has Fleetwood Sam (Box 1) – a son of Mepunga Hayley – and Weblec Scorcher (Box 7) – a son of Weblec Rose – in the Maiden Sprinter Heat 1 (7.28pm).

Mepunga Hayley has already produced talented city winners Mepunga Missile and Mepunga Katie (G1 Sapphire Crown finalist), while Weblec Rose is the dam of Weblec Ace (finalist G1 Temlee and G1 Sale Cup) and Weblec Jet (winner G2 Geelong Gold Cup and G1 National Derby finalist).

Langton also has Fleetwood Sam’s litter brother Midday Snooze (Box 3) and Weblec Scorcher’s litter brother Weblec Cruiser (Box 7) in Heat 2 (7.47pm), along with Poppy Passion (Box 7) in Heat 3 (8.05pm).

And she’s represented by Osprey Rose (Box 3) – a daughter of Mepunga Mia – in Heat 1 (9.50pm) of the Maiden Short Course.

Mepunga Mia has produced greyhounds the calibre of Circle Of Dreams, Mepunga Wonder, Steinbrenner, Spearhead and Black Hornet.

As for her best chance in the Maiden Sprinter heats, Langton said: “I’d probably lean to Midday Snooze, but they’ve all got ability. He trialled well here last week.”

And her thoughts on Osprey Rose: “She’s got some race experience and is a good chance. It’s her home track and she knows what it’s all about.”

Langton was also approving of the ‘Pink Diamond’ concept.

“It’s great that breeders are being rewarded and it offers excellent prizemoney for owners and trainers.”

Pawnote: Langton’s partner, Jeff Britton, has a total of five entrants contesting tonight’s ‘Pink Diamond’ Maiden heats.
