Victoria’s richest greyhound race, the $630,000 TAB Melbourne Cup (515m), will be held this Friday night (November 29) at Sandown Park with the electrifying Hooked On Scotch an odds-on favourite.
Held in front of several thousand fans each year, the TAB Melbourne Cup is considered the world’s greatest greyhound race due to its prestige and long history dating back to 1956.
A number of feature races will be held on Friday night’s card taking total prize money beyond $1 Million, including $435,000 to the TAB Melbourne Cup winner.
Hooked On Scotch is just 23 months of age but he has taken the sport by storm in his short but illustrious career having already captured four group wins in his first 15 starts.
In last Friday’s heats, the Jason Thompson-trained superstar broke Sandown Park’s long-standing 515-metre track record, clocking a time of 28.94sec, some five lengths quicker than the next fastest heat winner.
He exited Box 8 that night, the same draw he has in the final.
The Thompson family is chasing its fifth Melbourne Cup and they also have Flynn (Box 4) in the final.
GRV Chair, Peita Duncan said the TAB Melbourne Cup is greyhound racing’s ultimate prize.
“The TAB Melbourne Cup is the race that every greyhound breeder, owner and trainer wants to win more than any other,” said GRV Chair, Peita Duncan.
“The amount of prize money on offer is life changing and it is such a difficult race to win. It is genuinely regarded as our sport’s holy grail.”
Supporting features on Friday night include the $105,000 to-the-winner Group 1 Bold Trease and, for the first time ever, the two-dog Cup Night Speed Star (515m), to be held after Race 3 between dual Group 1 winner Sennachie and ‘The People’s Dog’ from NSW, Feral Franky.
Be on course at the TAB Melbourne Cup for an incredible night of racing with loads of entertainment. Entry is free with the first race scheduled for 6.52pm.
