Anakie mentor Jeffrey Britton is eyeing a $12,000 first prize in a Grade 5 final over 600 metres at The Meadows tonight.
Britton will launch a two-pronged assault on the event, with ‘brother and sister’ Mister Harlewood (box one) and Miss Bellawood (box four).
The Watchdog has settled on Mister Harlewood to ‘bring home the bacon’, given he’s a two-time Group race finalist and produced a gutsy performance winning his heat last week. He clocked 34.52sec in his middle-distance debut at MGRA headquarters.
Mister Harlewood also has the necessary early toe to take full advantage of his rails draw, considering he’s notched four sub 30-second wins at The Meadows (525m) – 29.92sec, 29.87sec, 29.79sec and 29.76sec.
A finalist in this year’s Group 1 Vic Peters Classic (520m) at Wentworth Park in Sydney and Group 3 Cranbourne Classic (520m), Mister Harlewood has registered six wins (with two seconds and five thirds) from 18 starts. He was also a reserve for this year’s Group 3 Warragul St Leger (460m).
Miss Bellawood was far from disgraced in her heat, beaten three and a quarter lengths by fastest qualifier Gwydion (34.29sec).
A recent finalist in the Group 3 SA Oaks (515m) at Angle Park in Adelaide, Miss Bellawood appears the value runner in the final.
