TRAINING THE TRAINERS

Being a greyhound trainer is a rewarding activity that comes with significant responsibility for the safety, health and wellbeing of the greyhounds in their care.

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) is responsible for ensuring that the people entrusted with the day-to-day care and management of racing greyhounds have the appropriate training, skills, and background to perform their role appropriately.

To be a greyhound trainer in Victoria, applicants must be 18 or older and are required to undergo a fit and proper person assessment, which includes investigation into any past instances of animal mistreatment, complete the relevant written competency assessment, pass a practical competency assessment, and successfully pass an official kennel inspection.

They also need to undertake a Police Check and disclose any relevant disciplinary or criminal matters.

Once registered, trainers are required to comply with ongoing competency requirements, maintain required kennel and facility standards and comply with the Rules of Racing, GRV issued policies and the Victorian Government’s Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds.
