Western Districts Derby and Oaks | Short Straw Trev and Sharapova Star

Short Straw Trev has added the Group Listed Western Districts Derby (450m) to his resume following a faultless all the way performance on Wednesday night at Ballarat.

The Don Rhodes trained chaser stopped the clock in a new personal best time of 25.08 seconds, this time holding off Shima Stan. He went 6.36 seconds early, which is a length of the first sectional track record.

Short Straw Trev, or Collingwood as he is affectionately known is a winner of six races from 13 starts, which includes victories in the Sale Rising Star and Lang Lang’s Victorian Coursing Derby.

Short Straw Trev leads all the way in the Western Districts Derby from box 7.

It was a big night at Ballarat, who also held the Lil Dickie Oaks which was won by Sharapova Star.

Trained by Tina Womann, Sharapova Star has been unbeaten in her past three career starts, which included a Metropolitan victory at The Meadows.

Sharapova Star is a daughter of Fernando Bluey (and Midnight Snooze) who was known for his consistent early speed. The litter was bred by Jake Loverso, who trains most of the litter.

Fernando Bluey has sired three litters.

Sharpova Star wins the Lil Dickie Oaks from box 7 in a time of 25.32 seconds.
