Maybe Yesterday was rewarded for his amazing straight track consistency when sensationally upstaging arch-rival Unleash Collinda in Sunday afternoon’s $87,000 Group 2 Sportsbet Healesville Cup Final (350m).

Maybe Yesterday, trained at Pearcedale by Andrew Parsakevas, set Healesville alight when claiming the $55,000 Cup winner’s purse courtesy of a near-record 18.784sec performance.

“You can’t go into races of that nature with any real confidence. But once he found the rail and Unleash Collinda crossed to his outside, I knew we’d be hard to beat,” Paraskevas said.

His winning time was just two lengths outside Unleash Collinda’s 18.64sec track record and one length off his PB of 18.71sec.

It was a new race record, eclipsing Allkel To Excel’s previous benchmark of 18.799sec, established in 2015.

Incredibly, Maybe Yesterday, a December ’20 son of Bernardo and Eye Will Reign, also bred and raced by Andrew Paraskevas and father John in their Sparkle And Fade Syndicate, has finished top-two in his last 15 starts, all at Healesville, in a sequence dating back to May.

Maybe Yesterday has won 11 of those 15 starts, finishing second to Unleash Collinda in all four of his defeats.

“He is a pleasure to train, as is the entire litter which includes Sleepless Nights and Every Four Years. They may not be the fastest dogs in my kennel but they are quiet, clean and they do everything right. A lot of the credit has to go to their sire Bernardo,” Paraskevas added.

He upset Unleash Collinda to win the Members Trophy in July but had to play second fiddle to the ‘King of Healesville’ in the G3 National Straight Track and Victorian Straight Track Championships last month, albeit beaten less than a length on both occasions.

But Sunday was Maybe Yesterday’s time to shine, turning the tables on Unleash Collinda in a breathtaking display.

Unleash Collinda (box 3), fifth in last year’s Healesville Cup Final, met with heavy support on Sunday, backed into $1.90.

Maybe Yesterday (box 7) was second elect at $3.40, with last year’s runner-up Quinlan Bale (box 8), trained by Danny Gibbons, the only other finalist at single figures, at $5.10.

Maybe Yesterday began brilliantly and Unleash Collinda couldn’t reel him in, as Maybe Yesterday claimed his first Group trophy with a dominant three-length success, his 20^th win from 31 starts, with 18 of his victories coming at Healesville.

Quinlan Bale finished third, his second successive podium finish in the Healesville Cup, as the ‘Big Three’ filled the trifecta.

Paraskevas, who is renowned for the excellent placement of his greyhounds, said he had no immediate plans for Maybe Yesterday, who is a Healesville specialist.

“I don’t get ahead of myself when it comes to planning races for my dogs. I always have an eye to the future but things can change so quickly and my dogs need to tick a lot of boxes before I enter them for any feature race,” he said.

“I’m probably a bit unconventional with how I train. I like to take it one race at a time. That’s just what works for me.”
