Lara-based trainer Craig Treherne landed five winners – including three Grassroots Western Sprint heats – at Warrnambool on Monday.
In a fantastic feat, Treherne’s Grassroots heat winners were Konta ($1.80F) in 25.67sec (Best), Saint Jett ($10.60) in 25.88sec and Gleaming ($6.00) in 26.15sec.
A winner of seven races from 55 starts, including two from three at Warrnambool, Konta notched her first victory since Anzac Day at Healesville.
Saint Jett secured his fourth win from 44 starts, while Gleaming snared her fifth win from 25 starts – including three of her past eight.
Treherne also saluted with Ripper Roxy ($6.60) who ‘broke the ice’ at her fourth start clocking 22.65sec in a Maiden (390m), while Gamblin’ Ways ($3.00) made it two wins from six starts posting 25.72sec in a Mixed 6/7 (450m). His past four starts read: 3131.
Incredibly, a five-leg $1 Multi on his quintet would have returned almost $2270!
Meanwhile, in the space of two hours, Treherne collected $7700 in prizemoney.
And he was also ‘gleaming’ (if you’ll excuse the pun) in his support of the ‘Grassroots’ initiative, saying “it’s what the industry needs”. “Lifting prizemoney for lower ranked dogs keeps the ‘battler’ in the sport.”
Treherne added it was great to come away with three Grassroots heat winners who he rates better than their 275+ ranking.
Konta, Saint Jett and Gleaming now head into a Western regional semi-final at Warrnambool on Thursday, September 16.
The $7000 to-the-winner Grassroots Regional Sprint Championship final (450m) will be held at Ballarat on Wednesday, September 22.
