Astute husband-and-wife training team Kel and Jacqui Greenough hold the key to Saturday afternoon’s lucrative Vic Bred Maiden final (525m) at The Meadows with promising young females Perfectly Poised and Slick Sister.
Perfectly Poised, a litter sister to potential staying star Zac’s Entity, which ran third in the G3 Speed Star (600m) at The Meadows on Wednesday at just his third start, is TAB’s $2 favourite, shading Slick Sister at $2.40.
Both have been ultra-impressive in winning their heats and semi-finals of the $12,000 to-the-winner Maiden feature.
Perfectly Poised (Fernando Bale x Zara’s Entity), won her heat in 30.50sec and semi-final in 30.06sec, while Slick Sister (SH Avatar x Broadway Miss) clocked 30.11sec and 30.23sec respectively.
After being beaten at her first six starts, albeit running five minor placings, Perfectly Poised is chasing her third straight win since resuming from a seasonal spell, although Greenough says box six is a concern in the opening race on Saturday’s card at 4.14pm.
After making her debut on August 1, Slick Sister has won two of her three starts and she will exit box three.
“Perfectly Poised wasn’t winning early on but she wasn’t far away, always running reasonable races,” Kel Greenough said.
“Then she came on season and has won both her starts since coming back. She may have come back a fraction better.
“She goes okay and she does have the early speed, which is an advantage in a race like this. But she isn’t a consistent box dog and that’s the concern.
“I think she probably looks the leader in the race; there doesn’t appear to be a lot of early speed in it. But she’s a hit-and-miss beginner out of box six, so you’re not going to say she’s going to spear straight to the front!
