North-East Wrap: Soda Lad No Fizzer in Cup Final

Welcome to this week’s edition of the North-East Wrap which was highlighted by the super win of Soda Lad in the $35,500 Northern Districts Cup Final at Shepparton.

Sunday night was feature race night at Shepparton where we had a wonderful field assembled for the Group Listed Northern Districts Cup final. Favourite for the final was the previous weeks’ fastest heat winner Disco Rain (1).

Owned by AFL footballers, Stewart Crameri and Michael Hurley, the Ian Garland-trained greyhound jumped out well but copped a slight bump as Miss Suzie Que (7) charged across from the outside and found the front shortly after the start. This allowed Soda Lad (8) a clear run and he quickly made ground to get to second rounding the first turn.

At the first corner there was trouble as the Darren Fisher pair Aston Gatum (4) and Cosmic Lily (6) were out of action but did chase the rest of the field into the Catching Pen.

So on to the home corner they raced and it quickly developed into a two dog race between Miss Suzie Que and Soda Lad, early in the stretch Miss Suzie Que had a break but you could see Soda Lad coming. On the post Soda Lad drove hard and landed the $25,000 first prize narrowly over a gallant Miss Suzie Que with the favourite Disco Rain finishing third. Locally trained by Tanya and Jimmy Auld Soda Lad took his earnings career earnings beyond  $30,000.

Other strong winners on the program included the Jason Thompson trained pair Light ‘Em Up – who’s dam is Peggy May (pictured above) – in Race 7 who flew around the 450 in a very fast 25.068 secs. It was a stunning win and also Wahlberg in Race 11 – that appreciated drawing the outside – to blitz around the 390m trip in 22.093. Both greyhounds have the talent to continue on – and win – better races in my opinion.

Peter Dapiran also trained a treble which included a quinella in Race 10.

Other racing in the past week included a couple of meetings last Friday and Saturday at Bendigo where impressive winners included Major Curly by 16 lengths in Race 9 and El Marny in Race 11 on Friday. The more prolific winners on Saturdays program included Big Barking Bert in Race 5, Bills Back in Race 7, Dundee Toro in race 8 and Liam in Race 9.

The other meeting held in the North East last week was conducted Sunday up the straight at Healesville. The pick of the day was certainly Gospel Lass in Race 7, after scoring there in a heat of the Grade 5 series it was contesting the final and she pinged out to lead. It was all over after the jump as won in exceptional style the day’s best time of 16.653 secs. Other notable winners included Brodie’s Mullet in Race 3, Hurry Home Cain in Race 11 (who has now won 3 of 5) and in the last race Bejay The Dejay won again up the straight in the fast time of 16.670 secs.

That wraps up racing in the North East for the past week. Hopefully you found a winner or two. A busy week is coming up, with the heats of the Vic Breeders kicking off at Bendigo on Friday and heats of the Puppy Championship at Healesville to be run next Sunday.

Until next week Good Luck and Good Punting.
