Favourite wins world’s richest greyhound race

Aston Dee Bee ($2.40F) won the $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup (515m) at Sandown Park last night following a powerful performance from box one.

After Up Hill Jill ($9.30) and Raw Ability ($5.00) got away to a brilliant start, the pair tangled on the first turn, paving the way for Aston Dee Bee to hunt up on the rail and snare the $420,000 first prize.

The victory provided his breeder and owner Ray Borda of South Australia a sense of relief.

“He ran second in the (Group 1) Adelaide Cup and second in the (Group 1) Topgun, so he deserved to finally win a group race,” said breeder and owner Ray Borda.

“Tonight he drew the right box and he used it to his advantage.”

The Seona Thompson-trained Aston Dee Bee defeated Chasin’ Crackers ($16.40) by almost four lengths, with Kouta Mayhem ($14.40) third.

Earlier in the night, Fanta Bale became the third greyhound in Australia with $1million in prize money after taking out the $100,000 Group 1 Bold Trease.

She took her earnings up to $1,094,170, joining Fernando Bale ($1.29M) and Dyna Double One ($1.16M) in the million dollar club.
