New South Wales greyhound Ando’s Mac ($12.90) won the world’s richest greyhound race tonight, the $600,000 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park.
It was the first time since 2000 that a greyhound not trained in Victoria has won the race, with connections collecting a $420,000 first prize.
Despite Ando’s Mac slightly straining his deltoid muscle in his heat, trainer Jason Mackay was confident that a few days rest would have him cherry ripe and that proved to be the case.
“I’m lost for words. Sandown is the home of greyhound racing and the dream of winning a race like this is why greyhound trainers get out of bed each morning,” said Mackay.
“I have to thank (Victorian trainer) Anthony Azzopardi, who has looked after Ando’s Mac for me this week while I went home to NSW.”
“He treated the dog like it was his own.”
Azzopardi had the race favourite Zambora Brockie, who jumped well before being crowded on the first turn, allowing Ando’s Mac to skip clear and hold on to win over the fast finishing Jesaulenko and SA star Worm Burner.
