Increased racing opportunities and a home for life is what awaits greyhounds that find new owners at Greyhound Racing Victoria’s (GRV) upcoming 2016 Ready 2 Race (R2R) sales.
GRV R2R, is a trial series over two weeks, followed by an auction of up to 250 Victorian bred greyhounds to be held on Saturday 26 November at the Bendigo race track, is a platform for people to become owners of young greyhounds which have trialled at the track twice.
Greyhounds purchased from the R2R sales are ready to start their career on the race track, providing an opportunity for owners to enjoy all the thrills and excitement of greyhound ownership straight away.
These greyhounds, which will be available for sale by auction are all Victorian bred, will provide owners with extended racing and prize money opportunities through the Vic Bred program.
Victorian greyhounds will now also benefit from an increased number of races to be run exclusively for Victorian-bred greyhounds, including an extra weekly race meeting for lower ranked and older greyhounds at Victoria’s safest track, up the straight at Healesville.
More than $43 Million in prize money is distributed throughout Victorian greyhound racing each year, including a record $900,000 set aside for Victorian-bred greyhounds as part of the Vic Bred series.
The R2R sales, additional Healesville meeting and Vic Bred series will now be easily identifiable with the use of a new stamp signifying them as GRV Vic Bred initiatives to help provide Victorian greyhounds with longer, safer and more prosperous careers.
Importantly GRV will be utilising the R2R to emphasise to new and existing owners that greyhounds are much more than just a racing proposition with re-homing the expected outcome for all Victorian greyhounds, including those purchased at the Ready 2 Race sales.
Because of their friendly and adaptable nature, greyhounds have become an extremely popular pet option with more than 1,500 former racing greyhounds being adopted into Victorian homes through GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program over the past two years alone.
However, owners of racing greyhounds are urged not to rely solely on the Greyhound Adoption Program’s pool of potential adopters to adopt their greyhound when it finishes racing.
It is imperative that owners have a course of action in place to ensure their greyhound lives a long and happy life beyond the racetrack, whether in their own home or the home of a friend or relative. This includes having an immediate plan in case your greyhound’s racing career doesn’t go to plan and ends sooner than expected.
Greyhounds can now obtain a special GAP green collar, through a variety of methods apart from going through the GAP facilities. A retired greyhound with an official green collar means they don’t have to wear a muzzle in public.
