Alarm Bells Ring with massive Sandown Cup upset!

Rank outsider Bells Are Ringin (Gerard O’Keeffe) has stunned punters by winning the world’s richest staying race for greyhounds, the $250,000 Group 1 RSN Sandown Cup (715m).

Leading virtually all the way from box 5, Bells Are Ringin paid $38.80.

“How could this not be a highlight, winning the world’s richest staying race,” emotional trainer O’Keeffe said after the win.

“I didn’t back her, but it turns out I didn’t have to, because I just won (a) $175,000 (first prize)!”

Bells Are Ringin held her nerve despite pressure throughout from runner-up Who Dey, with Zipping Kane winding up in third place.

The Sandown Cup concluded Sandown Park’s May Racing Carnival, during which all three Group 1s were taken out by hobby trainers – Steve Creighton (Narralee – Sapphire Crown), Geoff Scott-Smith (Dundee Osprey – Harrison-Dawson & now Gerard O’Keefe (Bells Are Ringin – Sandown Cup).
