With just days to go until the October 24 nomination deadline, Robert Britton is urging Victorian breeders to enter their pups into next month’s Ready 2 Race Sales at Bendigo.
The Lara trainer knows firsthand that there are plenty of cashed up owners wanting to buy greyhounds at the R2R Sales, having personally been flooded with enquiries over the past 12 months.
“Since the 2013 Ready 2 Race Sales finished I have received at least one or two emails every week from prospective buyers wanting me to help them buy them a greyhound at the 2014 Ready 2 Race Sales.”
“I’ve had over 80 enquiries from different people, so I have no doubt that there’ll be plenty of bidders there on the day and pups will be sold for good money,” Britton said.
Britton said that while the mentality among Victorian breeders is to keep their best pups for themselves and put their second stringers into the auction, he said that if breeders changed their mindset they will reap in the rewards.
“At the ready to race auctions in America, which is held twice a year, the top breeders breed litters purely for the auction.”
“They take a lot of pride in trying to breed the fastest litter in a series and when the pups go to auction they basically make their salary for the year, and it’s a really good salary at that.”
“There are so many people that want to own a racing greyhound, and the immediacy around the Ready 2 Race concept is perfect because you only have to wait a matter of days or weeks before the greyhound you buy is racing.”
“Over there, if a breeder sells a pup that goes on to be top class, the next time that breeder sells pups they are in enormous demand.”
Britton cited examples from the 2013 Ready 2 Race Sales where people paid big money for pups.
“Some of the pups sold for huge money last year. Turbine sold for $28,000, which is absolutely enormous, while there were four others that sold for at least $15,000 and another five that sold for $10,000 or more.”
“The series is just going to grow every year so I expect there to be more bidders this year and the breeders who are willing to nominate their better pups could emerge the biggest winners,” he said.
GRV announced on Monday that nominations for the 2014 Ready 2 Race Sales have been extended by one week, and will now close on Friday week, while the eligibility criteria for pups has expanded, paving the way for many more greyhounds to be nominated.
