Victorian stayer Sweet It Is, winless since her victory in the Group 1 National Distance Championship in Perth in August, won the Group 3 Sydney Cup (720m) at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.
And, as we’ve come to expect from her, the Darren McDonald-trained stayer did it in spectacular fashion, making up 10 lengths on the pacesetter Zipping Maggie before winning by three lengths.
In snaring the $25,000 first prize, Sweet It Is, a three-time Group 1 winning stayer, crept closer to the magical half a million dollar mark by taking her career prize money earnings up to $464,000.
The daughter of Mogambo and Off Springer, who was bred by Lenny Jones and is owned by the Two Bear’s Syndicate, has now had 43 starts for 12 wins and 14 placings.
Incidentally, fellow Victorian Zipping Maggie (Peter Dapiran) held on for second place, while reserve Space Star (Dawn Garrett) finished third.
The win capped a big weekend for McDonald, as the Devon Meadows trainer prepared three Geelong Cup heat winners on Friday night.
